    Default Lioness with sky

    1D Mark IV, 300 mm f/2.8 + 1.4x TC (420 mm) at f/6.3, ISO 400, early morning light.

This lioness was keeping an eye on her cubs. I couldn't get any lower. Full height, cropped horizontally to avoid distracting elements.

So, how did you get so low?
Love everything about it. All the technicals spot on. Soft light and angle is gorgeous.
Most of all I like the feeling that in the next second she will turn and look directly at me!!! And maybe step on me!!!

    Roger,

Very nice indeed, the flies add to the sense of reality.

Was the Lion a little higher than you?

Perfect low POV Roger and the HA works a treat on this with good detail and clarity, especially in the mouth. You can't help feel sorry for the lioness with all those flies.

Would agree with Dumay about the slight de saturation.

Thanks everyone, I'll play around with the yellow. The yellow color was due to the early morning light.

On this trip, I made very few image from the top of the vehicle. I mostly worked from the window of the vehicle, on my knees. In the case of this lion, she was on a small hill. She was traveling in one direction, so we got in position for her to come toward us over the hill and I got her at the top. The image does give the feeling of being at ground level.

Tom, this was the lioness at the marsh near Ndutu with 3 cubs. I have the 3 cubes coming over the hill too.

Beautiful lion portrait. Flies really add to the realistic feel of this. POV excellent and I like the warmth so would hate to see it desaturated too much.

Is yellow/red perfect or too much? Always a question on these golden hour shots.
Hope your 3 cubs is as nice.
I also when possible tried to shoot from open window, but not easy with seat in the way, restricted view angle, all things considered. Your (and Per) knee pads good idea even if it does look like you've been laying floor tile!!!!

    Hi Tom,
I agree on the restricted view angle, but then one just needs to instruct the driver to move the vehicle.

All: we had Toyota landcruisers that had 3 rows of seats, not including the driver's and passenger's seats up front. We had both seats in the row just behind the driver removed. This gave easier access in and out the doors on both sides of the vehicle, but it also allowed kneeling access to the window on both sides. I would like to open the doors and lay on my stomach for photographing.

love the low angle and image quality here Roger! another vote for slight desat in yellows, maybe only 5 or 10 points needed? I get what you're saying, often these golden hours tend to be vivid in our memories as well so we want the images to portray that.

    please do post the cubs!

Excellent low angle Roger with great detail, also like composition and the pose you have captured - lioness on the move.

Thanks everyone. Here is the image with yellow reduced by 8 points in photoshop's color balance tool (on both mid tones and highlights).

    Roger,

Thanks for the repost, although it is difficult to compare images, in all honesty I think I prefer the OP

Compare the two side-side and the first difference you'll notice is the
    sky color!!
    FWIW !?!?!
