    Default Mombo Male Lion Pair

    Attached Images Attached Images

Canon 40D, Canon 70-200 f.28 IS, handheld. S/speed 1/400, f.2.8, iso400. Cropped from 10 to 7.5mp. In ACR6 lightened overall, brushed lions with warmth and contrast, clarity. In CS5 PS removed one small bright patch of sky in vegetation. Added contrast.
A coalition pair of male lions known as the Moporota males (which means sausage tree) for the area they moved in. Mombo Camp, Botswana. Light was low, taken just after sunset. Would have liked a little more light to work with but I enjoyed the slightly softer feel of this image.
    All C and C welcome.
    cheers

A 'formidable' pair here Grant, can't help wonder who the one in the BG is looking at.

I very much like the composition and framing of this, just the right amount of space. I think your PS treatment has worked and you have achieved your goal. Still feel the 7D gives images a little 'sootyness' overall, especially at low light and lacks a little clarity & sharpness IMHO.

    Grant,
I do hope you do not mind me commenting on your image.

It looks a little dull to me, not surprising given the light.

Was it taken with a 40D or the "sooty" 7D?

This could definitely do with considerably more opening up, I tried and it works.

Unfortunately I am unable to post my amended version.

Sorry Grant, meant to say the 40D gives a similar sooty feel to the 7D...

However you know my thoughts on Canon bodies at present, LOL

    Grant,

Nice juxtaposition of the two lions. I like the opposing positions of the front leg stride.

Do agree a bit too much yellow in the image. The shadows are low in density so not much to open up there.

Thanks for the comments Steve, Harshad, Ken, Robert and Peter, and for the rework Peter, much appreciated, and it does look a little better, I will take another look at my original image. Regarding IQ there Steve I am partly to blame as I shot at minus 1/3 exp comp, probably inadvertantly, as I remember I lost sight of these guys as they were walking through thick brush and when I relocated them had only moments to try get this shot. It was a couple years back...

Grant, better to have got this, than to have miss the shot.

Trust the sleep batteries are recharged now.

    All the best

I like this. Prefer the original as colours are nicer. Repost looks a bit too bright and contrastic in some areas and lost the nice mood of the original.

Tough call on the colours...given your explanation the OP could be a tad yellow but the lingering hues of the African dusk can still produce warmer tones...

I like the look of the boys Grant, nice eye contact on both and good use of DOF here. Ideal version is probably halfway between your OP and Peter's repost both in terms of brightness, colour balance and sharpness IMHO...

Steve, some of us like the "sooty" cameras

I also like the original color and contrast and mood better.
Would try cropping off of the top to give more emphasis to faces. And also seems to lower the perspective (but not actually I know).

Grant - I'm late to the party but wanted to say I love this. Great pov, juxtaposition and comp. I too prefer the OP.

    Rachel
