    Default Mara Hyaena

We encountered a clan of hyaenas making their way back to their den early one morning. Although the pose is fairly mundane, I liked the light on this one. I've left some detail in the hyaena which I like, but I suppose I could change the pp to reduce the coat detail and increase the rim lighting. Almost full frame.

Sorry Hilary but it's not really working for me on this one. The colours and tones look/convey early morning, plus the hint of dew on the grass, but as the Hyena is in shadow and there isn't much content in the image for me. As you say, you could tweak it to offer a more dramatic look & feel, but then to me it would possible offer an image taken later in the day? WDYT?

Steve, I take your point and really I'm not sure what I want from the image. I quite like it as it is, but it isn't really anything in particular so I don't know how to explain. Perhaps it just reflects something I experienced and the photo can't convey that to the viewer. I have some other more interesting poses which I'll get to processing in due course which may have more merit, we'll see.

Perhaps Hilary this is more of a personal experience and as you say, difficult to convey and if we were there with you, would understand the merits of the image. Certainly your new toy is proving to be a good addition to your 'photographic toolbox' and the images have definitely improved in their quality, colour and overall presentation.

    Hope to see more.

Hilary- I'm on the fence about this one. I like the rim light and the sort of slinking pose, I'm just not sure it goes far enough in either direction. Btw did you do any nr? I haven't gotten as clean images with the 7D at 1600.

Hilary, IQ looks pretty good on this, you are definitely up there with Morkel in getting the most out of the 7D at high-iso, well done in that regard. You are making me wish I hadn't sold my 7d Would like to see a more dramatic processing of this image to really bring out the rimlight, or will wait for the next pose that you have written of..
    cheers

I have to agree Hilary, this one just doesn't do it for me.

I am also not liking the dark clump of grass at the chin. A better (i.e. cleaner BG) and lower POV is what was needed here but not what you were given.

Thanks for the feedback everyone … I think I tend to agree with you all. Just doesn't quite fit the bill for me either.

Rachel, I processed this a while ago and I don't remember doing any NR, but looking at the raw file, it looks pretty clean (certainly for my high ISO images). There is hope for my 7D on my next trip if the operator pays more attention!
