    Default Rudy Duck

IMG_2968 - 2011-03-26 at 12-12-44 by dick pics, on Flickr
Canon 7D, with 100-400mm f/5.6 at 400mm, f6.7, 1/1000, ISO640, cropped about 100%, cloned out some debris in the water. This Rudy duck was taken in the Sweetwater water treatment area in Tucson, AZ. An excellent place to view and shoot birds of many species. I am new to this kind of photography so any C&C are very welcome. Thanks for viewing.

Hello Dick, you did a good job on the exposure and color here! The biggest problem with this image is the shooting angle - the bird is moving away from you and you were at a pretty steep angle to the water. Best to get down as low as you can and get the bird coming toward you! Hope you get to capture some more images of these ducks, they are very interesting and difficult to expose properly, which you did.

Thanks Kerry, will work on the lower angle in future shoots. Hope to be getting some Common Loons next week in MN.

Image quality is really good being a 100% crop. I like how you manage to get a catch light in the eyes, help bring viewer attention to the eye first. Good exposure on black and white too. Agree about the angle and bird being away from you. Sound like a very nice place to visit.

Agree with the above. BTW Dick, a really good way to encourage getting down and low is to wear clothing you don't care about. It sounds almost trivial but it works. I wear an a pair of grey or green overalls. On my calibrated monitor the image looks dark. You could lighten some and still not brighten the white cheek too much. If the cheek was already bright you could mask it off and brighten up the rest of the image. The middle slider in Photoshop's Levels tool would work well.
