Seeing that I had a dissappointing overcast day in the Pilanesberg nature reserve last sunday, I thought I would post a 'colour' image from the same location, but captured last year. There was a lot of sheen on the upper part of the bill, so I blended it in to hopefully look better. The BG is OOF foliage.

A somewhat unique composition with all the room and I really like it.

Bird and perch really stand out against the nice solid bg.

    Bill looks fine.

very nice Stu, for me there is too much empty space I would consider going tighter

I kind of like the empty space although I could see this with a bit more room on the right en less at the bottom too. Nice exposure, colours and HA. The light angle could be better. Nicely done in any case

I like the concept here, but I think you could preserve it and still go just a little tighter on the crop. The bird looks great, although I might lighten the area in front of the eye just a little.

Thanks a stack for all the feedback and comments. Here is a quick crop from the OP using your suggestions. Less space below, and lightening the area infront of the eye. I will rework the original a little later.

Stuart, loved the bird and that BG is as always, very nice. Great colors and sharpness. On the fence about the crop but good you tried something different. Empty space is fine but I think I'd have liked horizontal comp. more. Agree with Doug on lightening up some parts.

Looks like minimalist art with clean colorful components on pleasing negative space.
I like Krijn's idea of adding to the right and removing from the bottom.
Some fill flash would have been great. Very unique - I like it!

I like the BG and spce here bud. Colors also look spot on. Beak looks to have a few lines running vertically, not sure if thats a result of trying to remove the sheen.

Stuart, fantastic image. This bird is so beautiful and the background so nice, that I would like a tight crop, the open space just doesn't add anything for me. But with or without the extra space, this shot is just gorgeous. Those blues are electric. TFS

Stuart, I like the original comp. better. Great suggestion by Doug regarding lightening that area a bit. Sharp and lovely pose.

    Hello Stuart,

You are presenting us a very nice picture of a bird I didn't know :)

I like the light and the pov you took here. I suspect that this little guy is not easy to approach, isn't it?

Here as many others, I would have preferred a horizontal composition but I like very much the picture. Very well done and TFS,

    Michel

Thanks Michel. The problem with these guys is that they are extremely small ( 13-14cm ) so one needs a long lens to get a decent shot, as they are fairly skittish.

Thanks to everyone else for the feedback and comments.
