I was trying to improve my BIF images. I found this Grey Pelican flying straight towards me. It is an adult, non-breeding one. No crop. 1D Mark II, Canon EF 400mm F2.8 L IS USM lens with Canon EF 2xII converter. ISO 200, F11, 1/500.
I'm not crazy about the head angle here, but the rest looks fine. A tiny hotspot on the throat that could easily be fixed. Impressive framing for an uncropped image, but you could still take about half off the bottom.

In case of flight shot its all about finding out required shutter speed to achieve desired action. If you are looking to freeze action, I would go with best possible shutter speed. Shooting at 4000x2 at 800mm focal length, If possible I will maintain 1/800 shutter speed. At ISO 200 you still had enough room to kick your shutter speed higher to freeze action.
If you are looing for a wing blur, its again subjective how much blur you want and what would be the required shutter speed is.
Other than the head angle, I like the composition. Nice job.
