    Default Red-Shouldered Hawk

Here's an image from our last afternoon on Jim Neiger's boat. The bird launched away from us, giving us a great look at the topside feather detail, and the look-back pose turned this into something more than a butt shot. I thought the perch was pretty cool too. I knew I was trying to capture some fast action so I went for a really fast shutter speed on this shot.

This is a sharp, well exposed, generally excellent image. The wing position and eye contact are terrific!

But if it were mine, I'd clone out the branch that is farthest to the right. And I would add a bit more canvas above the bird if I could.

This works well for me as is. Love the backside view, detail, eye contact, and stop action.

Thanks for the feedback Norm. The far right branch is the branch that the bird took off from, so I decided to keep it.

    Doug:

Excellent display of the dorsal surfaces here, really displays his 'red shoulders' well.

When I first looked at the image, I had the same thought that Norm did, that from a pure comp standpoint, I would remove the lower right branch. But of course, as you pointed out, it helps tell the story here, so it has to stay.

Sounds like a really productive trip.

    Cheers

Excellent timing Doug, and a huge bonus with him looking back. Good show of the dorsal, showing the detail and colours, and overall, nice and sharp. ( I wish my kingfishers that take in the wrong direction, looked back )

Thanks Doug, for explaining the significance of that branch. Knowing that, I appreciate why you kept it.

Great image -agree with above comments
Did you consider toning down the branches (especially lowest right)?

    Hi Doug,

Love it! A wonderful pose with the great dorsal view and details and the lookback is perfect as are those peaked feathers on the top of the head. Very, very nice.

    Best,
    Katie
