You did great with the exposure David !!!! The light was your nemesis here !!! With the bird partly in shadows is not easy I think you did very well in PS
For these the best solution is fill flash Does help a lot !!!
Like the details color and BG. Agreed with Alfred, fill flash would really help. You can use quick masks of layer masks to tame the contrast, without them levels and curves are really handicapped.
