I would appreciate comments on this. Shot with a Canon 40D and Tamron 200-500. I have added a slight vignet to this although that is just a FYI.

The first thing I'd do is remove those branches/twigs...detracts from the image.

Agree with Doug re the foliage Phil. Some extra space in front of bird's bill would improve composition IMO.

I think I would mind the foliage less if there was more space to the left of the bird on the canvas. I sometimes don't like just a portrait with no foliage, branch, whatever.

I might be tempted to lighten the eye just a tad here and smooth out the background. Nice getting up this close to a Sandhill. I've yet to see one wild.

    Hey Phil,
Love your composition, and background. I would clone out the blades of grass to the left, and give it a tad of canvas on the left portion of the frame.

HI Phil !!! Big Welcome to BPN !!!!

Crop wise you have more room on the back of the bird than the front Normally should be the other way around Would select the bird and lighten some Seems a little dark particularly the head area Soft light would have made a difference The weeds I would remove to have a clean portrait btw with clean clear bg I don't like darkening the corners (vignetting) It works best with light subjects with varied bg and you wan to draw attention to the center.

I like the head angle and pose Not sure how you were able to get his low angle on the crane Good portrait !!!

Nice portrait. The grass has to go.

Thank you all for your comments, I appreciate all, and will incorporate most. In reply to Alfred, I was on my stomach and about 8 feet away from the bird. There was actually 2 of them. They stayed for about half an hour as if being paid for the shoot. There was 3 of us all enjoying ourselves. Thanks again, all.
