    Default Nickerson season begins!

Went to Nickerson Beach Saturday last week and had a great morning. Action really picking up with the mating OC and saw the first skimmer! Had more than a few mating ops......but this one was one of my favorites as he worked on this clam for a while! Even shared it with his mate.....until the gulls came calling!
Canon 1D Mark lll with the Sigma 300-800mm at 687mm for 1/2500 sec. at f8 and ISO 640...tripod mounted, old wimberly head. Minor beach clean up.

Nothing like living up to your name!
I have not seen one feed. Do they use that heavy bill as a lever and just pry the shell open?

Good shooting angle, like the tug of war, typical tight Roman crop, like the image composition/placement of masses.

    Cheers

This was a big clam Randy......he would jab that bill into a "soft" spot.........then use the bill as a lever. I never realized the bill was that powerful!!!....but I guess that is where they get their name from! I may have a bit of room!

Excellent image, Roman. Great lighting, action pose, detail and colors.
I like the dark sand and pastel color of the water.

This guy is not giving up on his food! I like the comp, and the flying specks of sand. The blacks look nice and rich. Not crazy about the water/sand line skimming along the bird's back, but an awesome image throughout.

Fantastic light, action, low angle and exposure. Love it! Beautiful image. TFS.
Minor crit - I see a halo around the head & neck.

This is very nice. Love the texture in the blacks around the eye as well as the general capture of a species doing what it does best.

I think I also see a halo but see slightly double anyway so I'm not that reliable. I have in the past spent time trying to clone out dust specks that were on my monitor rather than in the image!!!

Excellent image! Great expsoure control, sharpness, detail and behaviour. I see no problem with the shoreline. I do see a sharpening halo - especially noticeable around the head.

Stunning light and detail, great action. I actually like the shoreline in the BG, it would have been a bit dull otherwise. Super shot.

    Hi Roman,

Great behavioral shot! Love the HT and the action captured. The shoreline adds to the image IMHO. Agree about the sharpening halo. Well done!

OK, just want to say that I like that there is a shoreline - I like the split colour it creates and agree it adds to the image...it's just that I'm not crazy about WHERE that transition occurs (along the OC's back)...
