    Default Photosmith has been released

Photosmith which was designed to work with LightRoom on an iPad has been released at the Apple Store ($17.99).

"Photosmith™ will lighten up your workflow by letting you organize, rate, tag and label your photos while on the road with your iPad. When you get back you can easily sync your changes to Adobe Lightroom® on your PC or Mac." See more at: thttp://bit.ly/PhotosmithTourp://bi

    Will test it out tonight

I have a high sarcasm rate. Deal with it.

I had a chance to try out the software

It works as advertised. It allows you to easily view, sort, catalogue and rate images on an iPad. The interface is quite intuitive and easy to use.

There are a couple of drawbacks because of limitations set by Apple:
-only iPhoto can be used to delete files on an iPad (ie - you can't delete an image in Photosmith, you can mark it as a "reject" and then it doesn't get imported/synched into Light Room).
-although one can view image files while they're still on the camera or CF card reader(using either iPhoto or Photosmith), they can only be viewed as small thumbnails not much bigger than what's seen on the camera LCD screen. So you effectively have to import all the image files onto the iPad if you want to take advantage of full screen graphics

The software does NOT offer any image editing (ie - Develop module in LR). It really only tries to emulate the Library module in LR on an iPad. So if you do a lot of image editing on the road - this won't work for you.

The current version doesn't allow assigning multiple images to a common Keyword. Hopefully this will become available with a future upgrade.

Overall, it does now allow me to take an iPad2 into the field to be used as an ultralight weight (1 lb) storage device (64Gig), while taking advantage of the excellent graphics screen to view, sort and rate images which is what I was hoping for.

I should also have pointed out that another major drawback to the native iPad Photo app is the inabaility to create Albums. The initial Albums are Last Import and All Photos. The iPad Photo app will automatically organize the images into Events by their acquisition/transfer date. To create new Albums for your iPad requires iTunes and a PC : creating a master folder, then subfolders (which will become Albums on iPad), loading a photo into each subfolder, and then synching the iPad and PC thru iTunes.

Photosmith allows you to create Collections of your images very easily. You click New Collection, then just drag and drop the photos you want to add into the Collection. These will not appear as Albums in the native iPad Photo app. Rather the Collections will get transfered into LR when you eventually synch to your desktop/PC. A current limitation is that Collections can't be oganized into any folders or hierarchy in Photosmith, but this may eventually change in some future update.

Neither Photosmith or the native iPad Photo app allow comparative views of multiple photos (eg - side by side view of two images)

Support for Photosmith has also been quite good. Any questions/issues have gotten an email response within a few hours. Based on initial user feedback, they are already working on a couple of upgrades

So if you have an iPad and it can fit into your LR workflow while out in the field, it's worth a try
