    Default Sunrise over the Mara

I'm not sure whether this elephant was testing his strength with this tree or just rubbing his trunk. Nothing much happened even though I was waiting for something more spectacular to eventuate.

Silouette of elephant & tree look lovely against the morning lit sky, Hilary. Like where you placed the subject, and pano frame creates a nice composition. Wondering what the elephant is doing gives it added interest. I like the clouds, but also experimented with cropping them out to draw more focus on the elephant & tree, however that is a bit too tight. Very nicely done!

Hilary - nicely done but I feel like I want more space to the rhs for the tree to fall into or the elephant to move into. I like the contrast of the detail in the top of the tree against the silhouette of the elephant.

    Thanks Brendan.

Rachel, I understand what you're saying about the rhs space and I considered it when composing but I wanted to use the tree as a frame. I sort of wanted to go against the rule of space for the ele as it was already blocked by the tree. It is probably something which will annoy some but not others which is ok.

Thank you both for the comments.

    Hilary,

I am good with the rhs crop. On the left I suggest cropping midway between the two left trees. The lhs is not helping the image IMO. This crop is close to a square but I really feel it balances out the image and accentuates the right side tree and elephant.

Thanks Robert, the crop you suggest makes good sense so I'll give it a try. I don't have any problem with squarish images, thanks for the suggestion.

A lovely image Hilary, the overall effect for me is "Africa". Nice colour management. The image lends itself to quite a few crop layouts but I like the pano comp as posted.

Nice silhouette and sunset colors. I agree with other's comments about the crop. Suggest splitting the bushes on the LHS as well as trimming the top, bottom, and right. Also suggest a stronger dose of NR for the sky

Hi Hilary, a little late on this one, however...

Regarding the crop I like both versions as each has it's own merits IMHO, but what I might suggest is whether it needs to be more 'punchy' in it's look? Only you know/recollect the overall mood of the scene, but I just can't help wonder if things need to be a little bolder and might add more depth? BTW have you lightened it, as there is some 'mottling' in the BG of the OP?

Thanks Steve, better late than never!

I only noticed the mottly background when it had been mentioned but not sure why it is there. I've done another round of NR and increased contrast and re-cropped. I tend to underexpose to increase saturation and that may have caused the unevenness but perhaps the NR has reduced it somewhat?

I tend to not rely on my memory for what a scene looked like for colour or contrast as I think it is notoriousy unreliable (mine anyway) and normally I adjust for my current pleasure and interest. A bit politically incorrect, but honest!!

Just looked at the posted jpg and it still looks uneven. Perhaps I'll need to go back to the original file.
