    Default Is Wider Better?

I was creating many runway take-off blurs of Laysan Albatross on the last morning of my Midway trip. (Arrived home jet-lagged at 1pm today :)) When I noticed some birds taking off well to our right I suggested to the group that they zoom wider and attempt to include at least a strip of the loverly blue lagoon in their images. This one is cropped from behind and below for composition.

Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens with the 1.4X III TC and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 200. Evaluative metering +1 2/3 stops: 1/15 sec. at f/9.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

    Artie,

Looks good from here. I like the inclusion of habitat, but you know that ;~)

    See ya in FL.

Arthur, I like this one quite a bit. The strip of blue at the top is very nice and I would have to say wider looks better. The Albatross has lots of running room in this comp.

Hi Artie, I think the blue strip anchors the image well and provide a context to the runway. The runway pose with the shadow and the wing blur itself is fantastic. Love the sense of motion. Simply outstanding!

Have you heard anything on the shipment of the new 600?

Welcome home Artie. I like the inclusion of the bird's environment - helps with a sense of place. I wish there was a little more room on the bottom as it looks like the bird will be running out of the canvas shortly, but it's not a major issue. Otherwise I like the composition and the blur.

Great looking blur, Artie, wider is better, the blue water adds nicely to composition.

Artie, it was definitely better for this situation!

Thanks Scott. I see your point as the bird is running downhill a bit :) I do have more room below but was trying to avoid the boxy look.... I may re-address this one when I have some time to come up for air :)

Artie, I like the strip of blue and love the action you captured. It really has a nice soft flow to it which appeals to me. I think Scott makes a good suggestion and I could go either way.

Love this image Artie. The blue makes it for me, especially the pastel look. I also really like the head of the bird as it has an oddly cartoonish look too it. Well done maestro
