Has anyone had any experience with a rescue facility/organization for Parrots. Would like to know more about this model and how it works - thanks.

Hi Jeff,
About 30 minutes north of where I'm at is the "World Parrot Refuge" (not sure why they call it world). It is a pretty big place with hundreds of parrots of varying shape and size. http://worldparrotrefuge.org/
I know they have a tough go of things with raising money, especially with recent government funding cuts. But I'm sure if you got in touch with them they'd be happy to help out.

Jeff: Not sure what information you want. I've had experience with several, one that was a horrible model and another that I adopted a parrot from. I have no experience with adopting from the following, but they are well known. There is Best Friends in Utah which has a parrot section and another interesting one in Naples Fla, Aviary & Zoo of Naples (http://aviaryofnaples.com). The latter charges a fee to see the entire facility but it's always been helpful to get my parrot fix when on vacation. They have a lot of retired breeder birds in the facility and they are not for adoption. It's always interesting to hear conversations going on in one corner or another and then find out it's the birds talking rather than people. Other facilities take in unwanted parrots and then adopt them out to new families. Let me know what info you want and I can possibly make some suggestions.
Linda
Thank you all for the great feedback. I am thinking about the need in Middle TN. Seems to be a fragmented network, lot's of great people but no focus on Parrots. I contribute money to several but was wondering about a single focus. I know this is a hard business, always needing money and organizing volunteers. Hence, the better plan would be to support existing facilities I assume.
Plan to research a few centers and then determine my next steps. I am six years away from retirement,...if the capital markets do not collapse and want to spend my later years helping these beautiful creatures.
I have noticed that wildlife rehab facilities seem to be somewhat fragmented in general and independent businesses. I am thinking about supporting a neuter clinic as well, it help reduce the spread of unwanted animals. And in a stranger way, the reduction of unwanted cats will also help reduce the number of bird deaths.
Linda - I think your last sentence sums up my desire to help, the unwanted ones. I will be in touch, thank you. I will contact both centers and get back - this is very helpful.

I don't know anything about this organization, but came across it incidentally yesterday when I was looking for something else.

Steven and Ian, great links too. I am researching all information. Thinking about starting something in Middle Ten but need to consider helping existing facilities if possible.
