Hi Graham- I totally agree, the species is very elusive in my experience, mainly because they are so skittish.

I like what you have done here. The bird is nicely framed by the OOF foreground and background, and is nice and sharp with good eye contact. This framing would be changed with a recrop but I think you could consider bringing the bird out of the centre and moving him to the left by taking some off the left. The surroundings are busy but the main issue is the very OOF stalks- two on the right, another think one going right across the bird, and one thinner one going over the bird's back. They would be difficult to remove but it is possible.

Hi Graham, good suggestions by John above. This is a difficult bird to expose properly, as the white on the top of the head often gets overexposed as happened here. Next time you get a chance to capture one of these birds, try going 1/3 stop under what you determine to be the right exposure. I like the head angle and eye contact!

thanks both ,I take on board what you say , the Heron was in and out of the pools in the ditches lookng for frogs , It did not help that I was just ot for a casual walk when I spotted the bird and I was wearing some pretty bright clothing . A bit more stelth and less intrusive attire would have helped .
I allways seem to have a problem with white on black with birds ,coots in particular can be pretty difficult to expose and still seedetail in the white . thanks again I will try to alter a few things as reccomended during my next "expedition"
while I am on the subject of black and white ,can anyone tell me what this pretty little duck is . and how do I get rid of his coloured hat .
