This is one of the nesting pair of eagles at Shiloh National Military Park. They have two eaglets (four weeks old) in the nest. This was a miracle shot as it was flying low through the trees and it was all I could to to keep the eagle in the frame and in focus. The Nikon D7000 w/300mm F2.8 did a good job. The late afternoon light caused me to go to shutter priority at 1/1600, F4.8, ISO 400.
We are returning to Shiloh soon and would appreciate any tips on how to get better in flight shots. Shooting with a tripod or monopod did not work well for me. I was hand holding this one.
Nice job getting this guy in flight. Far wing shows well, dangling feet good.
The light angle was well off to the left and high, leaving the face and body in shadows.
The background is somewhat cluttered with the foliage, but there is pretty good separation.
in regards to BIF, there are the tripod guys, and the handholding guys. With your rig, handholding is a definite option. If using a tripod, I find a gimbal head a necessity.
You can really sharpen your skills by shooting gulls, ducks or whatever common birds you have. Keep practicing, and your keeper rate will really start to go up. It is a skill that gets rusty pretty fast, at least for me, and you need to keep using it to stay sharp.
Nice one getting this guy in flight...BG is a bit cluttred but this will do till you get a cahnce to take one with a clean BG...Nice flight angle...TFS Mike
I like the flight pose and the background doesn't bother me at all...looks like a windy day. I think you did well with the off-angled light and can appreciate this image because my situation is very similar with our local nesting pair of Eagles.
