Default Help with specs for laptop for editing

I would like to get a laptop for editing as I am more often on the road. Lately I have been using Mac but I have no problem with PC and actually I am more inclined towards PC this time that I would use also for my job. Main applications would be Lightroom, CS5, Niksoftware + I am also starting to do a bit of video. I would go for a 17" screen. I am not sure about how much ram, 8 GB for sure but, do I need more? Processor i7 quad-core but how much power do I need? How much is the advantage of SSD? As SSD gives a substantial boost to the price. Do I need two internal hard-drives? I would like to get something powerful that could serve me for few years. Thanks in advance for you suggestions.

Not sure on the PC side but I am running a Mac PRo i7 with two SSD Drives, 8gb RAM and it never bogs down, even when working on multiple 1Ds MIII files. The SSD for OS will make a significant difference. The second SSD I partitioned for CS scratch disk, back-up, and free space for files. While SSD for the 2nd drive is not necessary they are faster and not damaged by jarring while traveling. I put nothing on the first drive that does not have to do with program files. Additionally, I use two WD 1TB Passport drives for images while on the road.

I would think you could do the same with a PC cofig.

Maybe this is "obvious", but for photo editing the most important piece is the monitor.

Thanks, I am indeed planning to hook it up to an external monitor when I am at home

That assumes you can get the images on screen to work on them, wink, wink.

Highly Recomend. Latest 15" Macbook Pro. Quad core I7, 500 or 750gb HD, 8gb Ram.

Just load it up with Windows 7, and works beautifully as a PC.

I actually dual boot mine with Bootcamp, and generally run the MacOS, with Windows 7 booted in unity under VMWare Fusion. Runs very well (considering I'm running SQL and .NET dev stuff under the Windows side).

    Regards

    Default Lenovo t420s laptop

I just received my new Lenovo laptop. Weighs less than 4 lbs, had the new generation i5 quad core processor, 8 gigs ram, 320GB 7200rpm hard drive and USB 3. So far very impressed and you can get it with a 160GB SSD as well. The battery is not as large or long lasting as the t420, but it is thinner and quite a bit lighter and I routinely get close to 4 hours which is fine for the way I work. It has a 14" 1600 x 900 screen and is a worthy competitor to Macbook pro for folks who are PC inclined.
    Hope this helps.
