    Default Hunkered down Horned Lark

I watched and photographed this lark just at dusk as a cold front was coming in with rain and snow. The bird always stayed in this hunkered down position and shuffled around digging into the gravel. It looked like it was eating tiny bits of the gravel while trying to keep its feet warm. I believe that is a bit of gravel in its bill in this image.

Photographed at 6500' in the parking area of a wildlife management area not far from my home. I actually was turning around to check out a deer carcass for scavengers and this little lark caught my eye.

BTW, this is one of my first images with my new camera .

Canon 1D-Mark IV, Canon 400 f4 DO IS, ISO 800, f4, 1/400, exp. comp. +1, resting on bean bag on car window.

    c & c most welcome.

Nancy, Congrats on the new camera. I like the hunkered down pose. Is there a reddish cast. Maybe a catch light to the eye ??I might try to eliminate some of the OOF FG if it were mine. Very nice sharp details and I only have one image of a Horned Lark.

Congrats on the new camera. The image looks very sharp. I agree with Denise with a tighter crop from the bottom.

Good suggestions Denise & Tom. There is a very faint catch light in the eye that became lost with web reduction. I'll try to perk it up along with reducing the red cast as well as cropping from the bottom. Thank you for your discerning eyes .

The repost is a lot better imo. Without so much red cast on the rocks the bird really seems to pop more. Great capture!

Nancy, I think it looks better. Good work on the eye-I hate fake catch lights and I felt odd suggesting one but I'm glad you had some light to bring out.
