Well if you ever wondered where that fish went in James's shot...

Sorry, could resist it. Taken again in Katmai, early morning on an overcast day just as the tide was going out. As you will see, avoiding the Gulls is an impossible requested as they are everywhere and get in all shots. Just went to B/W on this one just for a change and no toning.

    Hi Steve,
Open mouth and eye contact of the hapless fish adds a lot to this image. I think the black and white conversion is able to handle negate the impact of the gulls in the background. The few raised hair on the back of the bear looks good. I am wondering if the water droplets would be better rendered in colour version. Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,

Hi Steve... great image... like the conversion .. would be tempted to burn the water in front of gulls and a slight burn on stones in front of bear..

Steve - this works really well for me. I like the overall comp and the conversion as well as the subject. I too like the open mouth of the salmon and the lit hairs on the back of the bear. It's funny, the gulls don't bother me except for the one in the middle of the puddle. It seems a little brighter and more like a blob.

    Well done and TFS,

    Rachel

OK, I'm biased but I don't see gulls as a detriment to such shots. Might be nice if one could avoid clipping parts of gulls (hard when there are multitudes and one's attention is on the bear) but overall I find more + then - in the gulls. Good head angle on the salmon.

Excellent POV here Steve and the comp works really well. Gulls add to the environmental feel of the image. Conversion looks good but I agree that the water droplets may look more natural in the colour version, i.e. it took a while for me to figure out what they were!

I like the comp with lots of empty space, works well with this image. I would back-off the sharpening a little bit.

It definately floats my boat Steve, a refreshingly different image especially in B&W.

How would I improve it? I don't think I could.

I'm loving your Black and White phase.
