    Default April Theme: Snowy Closeup

Taken last summer at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, Irvine, CA.

Canon 7D with the Canon 400mm f/5.6. Manual, f/8 at 1/1250sec, ISO 200, HH. Nearly FF (cropped a bit off the left side).

Thanks for looking - all C&C welcome,

    John

P.S.: I replaced my original posted image with a brighter one, as the whites didn't seem quite right. I would particularly appreciate feedback on that aspect of the photo.

Lovely pose. The egret looks like it is having a good time.

I also like the spacing of the photo. There seems to be the right amount all around.

If mine I might bump the whites up a bit more. It seems to me most post whites in and around the 225 to 235 RGB range. Sometimes a few areas might creep up a bit higher.
The lovely bg is dark so the contrast between white bird and bg is certainly there.

    Excellent job.

Nice and sharp, and the egret pops nicely against the dark green BG. I like the open bill pose. Whites seem OK from my end, but overall light looks a bit harsh...you did best you could with that though. I'd prefer a bit more room in front and below. Nothing personal, but I find this individual to be in rough shape with disheveled feathers and very worn bill - kinda ratty looking

Very cool open beak pose, and excellent sharp, close-up detail, John. Well done!

Thanks for the feedback everyone - much appreciated.

Thanks for that info Dave - I measure the whites at 220 max, so based on your quoted values I have some room to increase them.

overall light looks a bit harsh
The light doesn't seem that harsh to me, Daniel - maybe you're reacting to the sharpening level? I could pull it back a bit.

Nothing personal, but I find this individual to be in rough shape...
I don't take it personally, but the bird might! I figure that he (or she) has had a tough life and therefore earned his/her war wounds.

John, sharpening looks OK to me, as does exposure. I was just commenting on what looked like strong cool midday-ish light as opposed to soft warm light.

    I agree!!
