    Default Gadwall pair

    Another Gadwall,
    Canon 7D, 100-400 5.6L on tripod, 400mm, ISO 400, F8 at 1/1000
Heavy crop, increased brightness, used “auto” curves in CS5, sharpened.
Had to remove a bunch of “stuff” with content fill, and hoping it doesn’t show too much.
    CC welcome and hoped for.

I like the feather detail in this guy. Maybe try opening up the f stop and see if you can gey a little more bokeh.

The male looks great, though might be able to take a little more sharpening. I like the OOF female in the background but I'm not crazy about her being right behind his head. The water is just delicious. (I needed a new adjective and it seemed to fit here.)

Per Bill's comment, I'd need to see what the additional bokeh would do to the reeds. Personally, I like being able to tell that they're reeds. If they blurred a bit but you could still tell what they are, that would be fine by me, but if they just looked too much like a wall of color I would find it less interesting. Then again, I find I gravitate much more to habitat in images than some.

Stan - nice pov and the male does look great. I think I would go to a more traditional crop rather than the square and take off about half of the height of the reeds on top. That will place more emphasis on the male IMHO.

I like the square crop and the detail of the male. I like the idea of opening the aperture to increase bokeh and put more emphasis on the male. Your "work" cloning, etc. doesn't really catch my eye in this size, so you've done a good job in that regard.

I'll try and find in on here, sure there is a definition some where.

Bokeh is when the OOF area gets blurred. It varies in degree and smoothness. At an extreme, you can't recognize any detail in the background.
