These two were just barely flying this day. Lots of trips to the ground with mom flying down to check on them. Eventually they got the hang of it.

Beautiful. I am trying to get our Eastern Version to take up residence and raise some chicks in one of my houses. I was going to ask about one aspect of the crop. There is so much space to the left. Would about 1/2 inch off the left be too much? Perhaps I am attempting to make the crop too tight?

Hi Kerry - nice detail and light. I would be tempted to clone out the green in the bg in favor of an all black bg (if you don't object to that sort of thing).

Thanks for your comments! Jon, I could see a little crop from the left, but I was hoping to convey a sense of how small and insecure these little birds are. What they are looking at is their mother, who had just flown from that empty space and left them there.

Rachel, I thought about that too but I kinda liked the hints of environment back there. I do love chiaroscuro though (which this one technically is), and I did a small tutorial on it for OOTB. If you are interested look here - OOTBWorkflow: Chiaroscuro mini-tutorial

Hi Kerry - thanks but the link isn't working for me.

Great pose, Kerry. I also like the greater space to the left as well since they're staring into it, but I jump to the opposite side when it comes to the background. I think cloning a little of that green over to the left might actually give it a more natural feel, especially since you already have fairly dark birds against a dark background.

The only other thing I see is that there's something about the head "texture" I can't quite put my finger on, but it doesn't look natural. It shows up more in the right-hand bird. Maybe oversharpened or due to a heavy crop? Hopefully you can make sense of what I'm trying to describe.

Kerry, I love everything about this! The birds are great against the scale of the branch - it really sums up how small they are. I love the soft textures of their feathers against the hard textured branch as well - again, very nice! The dark BG brings it all together, really creating a nice mood here that its a big, bad world out there...

Love these guys. Love the tonality of the image. The poses are fantastic.
