    Default Whiskered Tern

I took my new baby (not my REAL baby, but my recently acquired 300mm f2.8 L IS USM) for a spin today at a nature reserve close to my parents' home. I also tested a well-looked-after 1.4x TC-II, which I subsequently bought.

Can't wait to use this combination on my upcoming safaris to the Okavango Delta.

This was my first close-up sighting of a whiskered tern, This juvenile was taunting the photographers in the hide time and again, and this time I was able to snap it as it lunged down onto the water plants. The light direction was less than ideal and the sun battled all morning to shake off some cloud cover.

    Techs:
    Canon 7D with 300mm f2.8 L IS USM + 1.4x TC-II
    f4.0 @ 1/8000 SS @ ISO-1600
I kept my camera on Av+ISO-1600 due to the nature of the weather, so for moments when the sun peaked through the clouds I had extremely fast shutter speeds such as this one.

I'd say your new combo worked very well. Love the spread wings and leafy habitat all around the bird.

I think it is really good, I like the light and the sun angle and the setting.
Looking forward to more shots with this combo.

A excellent capture with both wings fully spread and a nice catch light in the eye, and great sharpness (thumbs up for the new lens & 1.4). You might want to reduce the brightness of the white blob about an inch above the head.

Very well timed to capture the wingspread here Mork, and with good sharpness. I actually like the water plants. Great to bump into you yesterday, and hope you came away with lots of keepers. Cheers. ( I dont find that hide very user friendly, so never really pop into it )

Nice pose and great habitat. I can just imagine if the image had the lighting more frontal to illuminate the wings! Looks like that combo will be very good to you...

thanks very much for the kind comments folks. I do wish the light was "full frontal" but on this occasion took what I got with a bird I had never had a chance to photograph before, and while testing out this new lens combo
