    Default Arctic Butterfly

Winter is finally losing its grip on our butterflies and they are emerging from their ice bound hibernation. These hardy insects survive the below zero temps because of a glycol like fluid (antifreeze) in their veins and this trait also makes them unattractive to most predators. Hopes of seeing them, later in the spring and summer, often go up in smoke as they all migrate north of the Arctic Circle on the 1st of April. Enjoy!

Steve, The things you are doing with the smoke is amazing! Very creative and delicate. I love it! The BG really looks cold and icy.

Extremely creative, Steve! What will you come up with next? The butterfly and "icy" BG are superbly crafted, and I like your use of complementary colors.

I can't even imagine how you make a butterfly out of smoke

    This is wonderful, Steve!

Steve, I am completely out of adjectives to describe your smoke images! I'll have to use this one over again - brilliant.

It's all smoke and mirrors, Paul. ... and a bunch of flips/blending modes...
Separate smoke images for wings, thorax, antennae, and BG "ice".
This was the start of the wings...

    Steve,

Geez, totally unique, beautiful and creative. Love the composition, color and texture of the background and butterfly creation.

Two minor things that bother me just a bit... the lower saturation and slightly transparent look to the lower part of the right wing and the brightness of the upper left corner.
    Beautifully done.

I totally understand, Richard! That was my attempt to show the BF was still stuck in the ice. The ULC was showing various ice comp. Easy to tone down.

OK, then forget I ever mentioned the wing. Still love it nonetheless.
