Hard to believe these are the supermarket parking-lot dwelling, garbage begging, white-wash splattering, scavenging birds these guys are normally associated as being. In truth, these guys are quite beautiful at all times IMO, but their fresh breeding plumage is simply stunning. I've said it before...gulls are among my favorite subjects to photograph! This one photographed well away from a supermarket

Full-frame portrait of a Ring-billed Gull to showcase the pure white head feathers, and vibrant reds of the eyering and gape.

Canon 30D + 100-400L @ 400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2000s., f/8, ISO 400 (settings histogram checked), natural light, handheld.

Exposure is just perfect! Love the sharp eye and all the detail this picture provides. Great job Daniel!

Great looking portrait! The whites look nice and the red along the eye and the bill really pop out.

Awesome, Daniel. I see imagination and control in this and so many of your other shots. You seem to know what you want before you get it. How else could you have approached so close to the gull unless you knew what you were after? One thing: I'd be interested in knowing the subject distance in your fieldcraft portraits.

Great image of an overlooked bird! I like the detail, exposure, sharpness and red eyering.

This is the perfect time to get these types of shots. The white plumage will be held for months, but the intense soft part colors (eye ring, bill gape) are at their peak due to hormone levels.

Yes, but if you're clever and know the color of your local supermarkets' dumpsters, you could get some very pretty backgrounds.

Nice little splashes of colors in this close up portrait. Also like the light through the nostril.

Craig, these guys are easily attracted with food used as bait. A slice or two of bread (not stale!!) will get you two dozen of these within seconds :-) Most of my portraits are at, or close to, MFD of the 100-400 (which is about 6 feet).

    Paul, absolutely!!
