Shot this guy last November at Bosque de Pas Costa Rica. There are some conflicting markings. I think its a Magenta Scintillant Volcano Hummingbird Woodstar. HELP!?!?!
Christoph - I recently visited Costa Rica and photographed many hummingbirds. This one looks very much like the Scintillant Hummingbird - a female. It would be better if I could see the front but there are several key features that are consistent with the Scintillant - the orangish tail with the black bar near the tip, the white spot behind the eye, the striping on the chin and the beak size and color. I have many pictures of the Scintillant and they all look consistent with yours. Maybe someone else can be more definitive or suggest an alternative
I was at Bosque de Pas recently watching Scintillant Hummingbird and I agree with Dan that this seems to be one. As well as the features that Dan mentioned it seems to have the disproportionately large head of that species.
