I photographed this rufous-tailed hummingbird in Ecuador using a hummingbird set up consisting of an artificial background, 6 flashes, and a sugar-water feeder to lure the birds into range. The amazing flight abilities of these tiny birds provide endless opportunities for unique and beautiful flight images. "How to Photograph Hummingbirds using Multiple Flash" guide will be available soon.

    EOS-1D Mark II N, ISO 400, flash-on , 500mm lens, Wimberly tripod. 1/250 @ f29. Manual exposure.

Linda, I definitively want that guide! this is a great image. details here are stunning, the only thing I find is that on the right wing, the BG would be much better if were green all over. Just my personal opinion.

    Excellent shot.
6 Flashes? I have problem with one, can imagine how complicated the setup must be, but this picture certainly worth the effort.

Very nicely done Linda! Great pose and sharpness (love the feet). Can't say that I'm the biggest fan of the BG, but I'm not thrilled with the BG in my photo either. I look forward to reading your primer on multiflash hummingbird photography.

    Harold -

Just to clarify.....1/250th is the camera setting , but the exposure in multiple flash hummingbird photography is coming from the flashes - between 1/8000 and 1/20000 second. Thanks for commenting!

Oh Linda, this is gorgeous. I love the bg (which I find fake most of the times but not here).
    Very nice landing capture.

Amazing shot. That pose really makes him look like a mini hawk, talons extended, coming in for a landing! But then again, most Hummingbirds think they are the size of hawks. Fearless little flying machines!
