    Default Mombo Male Lion

    Attached Images Attached Images

Canon 40D, Canon70-200 f/2.8 is lens, handheld, 1/200s at f3.5, iso200. Cropped from 10 to 7.5mp, from bottom and RHS. Processed in ACR6 and CS5. Taken a couple years back, on overcast late afternoon, light was low and looked good for this portrait. The male lion is one half of a coalition pair known as the Western Boys, still active at Mombo. This male was looking at a buffalo off in the distance.

Thanks Harshad, though I didn't get two of them alongside one another like you did
As an aside, I didn't quite get the links on my signature on the image above quite right, but they should be working on this post and going forwards..

Great detail and color. Such a regal classic pose. I love the expression on the lion, you can sense him smelling that buffalo. Only minor nit would be a little more room on top.

One arrogant pose he Grant, great looking beast with good detail. Guess he was weighing up as to whether he was 'feeling lucky toady...?' The surrounding location has provided a nice setting to really show this guy off well, with no distracting elements. Nicely done.

Lets hope he is still there later this year.

Grant, he owns the area! Great use of DOF shooting this a 2.8; certainly show the sharp band.

Nothing for me to critique here Grant. Absolutely oozes power and a conviction of his strength and invincibility. Love the dof and the background.

super clarity, pose and IQ here Grant

just wondering if it needs a tad more space on the LHS and maybe a bit less on RHS?

Hi Gen, no more room on top, would have to add canvas. Morkel, no more room on LHS, would have to add canvas. Thanks to both of you for commenting, and also Steve, Hilary, Jay and Peter, much appreciated. He is still at Mombo as is his coalition partner, and where they are fathering a good number of cubs.
    cheers

Grant - great pose, very regal. Are these the same 2 that were known as the Mombo Boys? If so, I have photos of them from 2005 when their manes were growing in.

Thanks Vivaldo and Sabyasachi, for looking. Rachel, this pair are known as the Western Boys, and only started to become active around Mombo in 2007. The males you are writing of had already drifted somewhat out of the game drive area by the time this pair started to establish themselves. At one point there were three different male pair coalitions in the game drive area, although each pair concentrated their activities in different locations most of the time..thanks for looking and commenting
