A beautiful image... I'm amazed that the light (or the movement to position the light) didn't disturb the bird enough for it to move.

    Dumay:

Beautiful spotlight image, rich colors, attentive pose, sense of mystery. Low shooting angle.

I had the same thought as Mike about the light, surprised it didn't startle.

    Cheers

Good use of the spot, as the light is evenly spread. Well exposed in camera, and you have brought out good detail too. This is pretty sharp mate.

I love this image. The dark surroundings really bring out the detail in an otherwise well-camouflaged bird. Very dramatic, and very well executed.

Beautiful, love the eye. Despite having a light shone on it the bird looks quite relaxed. Did he fly?

Awesome technique with a great result. I like that his eye is not distorted by the light.

Love the low angle, the sharpness, and the details. The spot light look against the dark background really bring the bird into focus even more, which I think make the image even more interesting.

Extremely well-executed, unusual image. I'd love to hear more about it. Did you stumble on the bird then come up with the plan?

Thanks all...These birds hunt on the road at night...When we drive up to them we usually switch off the vehicles headlights and move the spotlight away from them as they are blinded and then freeze...I asked a guest to hold the spot while sitting on the vehicle as I work in a big 5 reserve...I proceeded to get out of the vehicle and position myself to get the image...I wanted the spot directly from above to be able only light the bird and a little around it trying to get the effect.
