I like the details on the bird and the in-focus vegetation around the bird and the diagonal line it created in filling up to the URHC. I'm not a fan of circular bokeh in the background so I might try to blur the background. Also might sharpen the bird a bit more.

Hazel, you've done a very nice job on the aperture choice/DOF but the lighting isn't the best. The head of the pelican feels quite dark and the surroundings feel the same way. I opened your image and you could see that almost all the histogram data fell between the midtones and the dark tones. I opened them back up with both a levels and curves adjustment - probably not perfect but you get the idea...and I recropped to take some off the bottom so the bird isn't quite so centered in the frame.

I also like the diagonal line of the foliage - and the bird has very good detail and HA. I added a tiny bit more sharpening as well. See what you think.

Jules, thanks. This is obviously a case of overcompensation on my part. I was so intent on trying to get rid of what I thought were blown whites in the feathers, that I lost sight of the rest of the photo. Here is the original with just a slight work on the white chest. I'll try to see the whole next time.
