Finally got one to perch at my backyard setup. Sony A700, 70-400G @400mm, f6.3, 1/320, iso800, tripod. Level adjustment and some desaturating of the reds, slight sharpening.

Peter - the composition of your image is very nice - great pose and head angle - and the creamy background is very pleasing. The overall image seems to have a green cast to it. The red of the cardinal also doesn't look right (too orange?), which is probably a result of the aforementioned colour balance issue. I'd consider a bit more sharpening yet to bring out some feather detail.

Hi Peter, nice picture of a beautiful bird!

I do agree with Jeff on the slignt color cast. Also, there is some noise creeping in on the flanks of the bird. I think the image would have benefitted from more saturated colors, and composition-wise, from a bit more space on the left side.

Thanks for your comments, Jeff & Xavier,
I do not see a color cast but agree the reds may be a little un saturated. I reworked the image and offer this re-post.
