Something different (you know how I love experimenting ).
This is the image I had in mind when photographing this young male standing aloof on a calcrete ridge in the Kalahari...the light was from behind him which didn't suit "traditional" shots.

Would love your honest feedback here...

Cropped a lot from top and bottom, maybe a little from LHS, hard to remember

Your experiments are to our advantage!

I think you've made the right choice with your pp for this image. I love the starkness of it which gives a great sense of space and heat. Would love to know what shooting techs you used here. Was it high ISO? Just wondering whether you needed much NR, just something about the IQ suggests that this may have been the case but I could be barking up the totally wrong tree (it happens! )

So what would I change if it were possible? I would have loved just a tiny bit more detail in the rocks but not so much that they could take attention away from the lion. I think to be fair to the viewer, this really needs to be seen in full size to pick up on the details. I don't think this size does it justice.

I think it works big time as is, despite my queries above.

    Hi Morkel,
Like the pano choice here. The bush on the left , with the branches curving slightly towards center, provides just enough of a bump on the horizon to balance the lion. Would only like to see a little more light in the darker left and center FG so that the darker area is not so continuos. Or slightly darken the lighter spots on the lower right to better balance with the bright sky.

Morkel - I like it and the pano works well. One small nit from me and nothing you could do about it - I would prefer if the lion was looking down off the ridge, surveying his (future) kingdom then off to the side. Keep the experiments coming.

No denying Morkel, you like to experiment and offer a different POV with your images.

My take would be, forget the detail and 'general' thoughts of shall we say 'conventional' look, but it's more 'shape & form'. Personally I think this is more to be viewed big, ie projected than on the small screen to appreciate it more. The darker lower half of the image gives the Lion a platform with the almost bleached out sky. Would agree on having the Lion looking towards would be the icing, but...

Hi Morkel, it works for me, and conveys a harshness of habitat...I agree with the others on lightening the dark rocks a little..
    Well done

thanks very much for the kind comments, folks...glad most of you like it :)

I'm not sure of my techs here but it had to be ISO400-800 for that time of day...fast SS since they were chasing an oryx a few minutes prior to this shot being taken
