Simon, welcome to our ETL forum! You've got a nice opening post for us! One thing I will ask is that you review the guidelines at the top of the forum and supply the additional information in the future (such as camera make/model, lens uses, flash, what you did in post-processing, the size of the crop, etc.) I know it sounds like a lot of extra stuff to write but it really does help us help you learn faster.
I like the size of the bird in the frame and you have him in a good position overall. He's got good detail and the background (BG) is nicely blurred. One thing that jumps right out at me is how dark the eye is. If you know how to do a curves adjustment, select the eye and then bump the light and midtones up a bit and that should help bring out the detail so we can see it better. Getting a good head angle and eye clarity is so important as it helps the viewer really feel connected to the birds in your images.
Keep them coming - and don't forget the information and never be afraid to ask questions if you have them. We also encourage everyone to comment on other people's images - you'll be amazed at how quickly you can learn from trying to sum up what you like and don't like about someone else's photographs.
Welcome to BPN Simon. Nice first post. Agree with Jules on the fine points. Nice pose and head angle. I think that it would be a good idea to lighten up the whole face area to balance the body tonality. Too bad about the band, but on the other hand a banded Redpoll must be pretty rare! Love the light here too.
By the way Simon, we encourage people who post images to offer their own comments and critiques of other images. It's a great way to learn and we really are interested in your opinion- what you like and what you think could be improved in an image. Have a go. It's a great way to maintain and build our BPN community.
