Default Harbor Seals on Ice Flow

    Attached Images Attached Images

This image is from last weeks bald eagle tour in Alaska. We found a number of harbor seals resting on ice flows. Here I chose to show some habitat. Handheld from a boat.

I am wondering if this may look better as a pano as there is a lot of open space at the top.

The detail, colour and a real variety of head angles makes this very good indeed.

I don't often alter an image but that might look pretty good...

I like the cleanliness and clarity in this Dale, nice setting on fragments of 'pack ice'? The inquisitive look is a nice touch to the image.

I agree that a pano looks much better here.

Of course I respect your opinion Dale, but I do not think that cropping is generally considering altering an image. We are given a piece of equipment with a set format. Cropping can just establish what you envisioned.

Of course if what you envisioned is the larger view, that's AOK. Hey, if you go to the landscape forum you will see I am the guy always supporting the big-sky look.

love the crispness here and the space you included Dale, although I like Ken's suggestion of cropping to pano - especially the "sky" part on top...

Great grouping of the seals. Nice light and color. Interesting to see how thin the ice is above the water. I agree that this would also look good with a pano crop.

I like it as is. Only one spot looks like a dust speck, above the closet seal. Not your ordinary seal image.

Beautiful colours and interesting subject matter in this image.

Regarding the crop, my first reaction was to agree with Ken regarding the pano crop, as it does appear logical given the amount of blue (sea and sky) in the background. However, my one additional comment which would incline me to keep it as it is, is the visibility in the background of what looks like distant cliffs which seems to add something to the depth of the image. With the pano crop, you are left with the little ice flows on rhs and lhs which float the eye out of the image. As it is now, you look at the seals, the ice in the water, the light coloured strip in the water, the far horizon and the distant smudges of shore (or something else? :2 ) and it gives a feeling of great space.

But I think I'll be a lone voice here and either crop would still make an exceptional image.

Nice colors, I like the combination of the blues with the seals. Prefer the pano look but works both ways for me.
