Default VirtualBox running more than one operating system at once: does it work with photoshop?

I am building a new desktop PC today and was planned to install windows 7 on it to run photoshop cs5 and a couple of other windows only programs.

But now I'm learning of virtualbox where one can run multiple operating systems simultaneously. http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html
    and it is free.

I prefer linux, so I can install linux and then virtualbox, then windows 7 and run both linux and windows simultaneously. Seems like the best of both.

I have seen on the net that people do run photoshop in windows under virtualbox. But does anyone have experience with photoshop CS5 and calibrating your monitor under windows 7 running in virtualbox?

Any other experience with windows under virtualbox? My other alternative is dual boot, but that is a pain (I have been dual booting linux/windows for a decade).

I've tried it with older hardware and software and wasn't able to calibrate directly in the guest OS. The guest doesn't have access to the hardware.

By calibrating in the host and copying/using that profile on the guest, it worked or worked enough where I couldn't tell a difference. Argyll CMS for the calibration software in Linux Mint (Debian distro) and the same in Windows.

    Chris,

Thanks for the info. I checked out argyll and it seems to be what I need.
    http://www.argyllcms.com/doc/ArgyllDoc.html
They now support the spyder 3 which I have. I've got my system built with ubuntu, and have downloaded argyll and virtualbox. My system is an 8-core box and I purchased windows 7 home edition and now see it only supports 2 cores, so now I've got to exchange it for win 7 pro.

I think this is going to work.

Roger, you will have to shrink your new system  into a super laptop for those of us who only use laptops!

    Jay,
It shouldn't be a problem. I dual boot my laptop now. It has a 640 GByte disk, 6 Gbytes of ram and weighs less than 4 pounds. And this is a machine I bought over a year ago.

x64 Home editions can handle up to 256 cores but only 1 processor. Home Premium is limted to 16GB memory too, Home Basic 8GB.

    Chris,
Thanks for that info. Microsoft.com has conflicting answers on their web pages, e.g.:

"Windows 7 Home Premium supports 1 physical CPU and unlimited cores. "

Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate allow for two physical processors,
Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium will recognize only one physical processor.

The 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 support more than 64 Logical Processors (LP) on a single computer using Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) hardware architectures.

Now I can't find the page that said support for only 2 cores. Maybe I misread it.

So it looks like I'm good to go with home edition.

I've never used VirtualBox but I have Windows 7 Ultimate as my main PC and run a Ubuntu distro on VMWare which I assume is about the same? I have been trying to learn linux so spend most of my time in linux and just tab out to go to windows when I want to run any sort of windows only programs. Also I have heard photoshop support in WINE is coming along pretty good so you may try that for your CS5 needs.

WINE/Crossover and CS5 isn't a reliable option. There are reports of people getting it to work, somewhat, sort of, kind of.... but there are still tons of hoops to jump through just to get to that point and then it's still not completely functional. Not all options are tested, color management probably non-functional, and 3rd party applications haven't been attempted from what I've read. A manual install via copy/paste of all the required dlls and then entering registry keys isn't exactly optimal either. Even WineHQ's 'platinum' rating on the older CS and 7.0 versions mentions buggy behavior.
