    Default Beautiful lighting.

I would like to see canvas enlarged to right and downwards. Colours of water and duck are excellent.

I'm no expert or professional but I actually like the crop just how it is. Beautiful colors for both bird and bg

Colors are fntastic as is the crop. One of the best Mallards seen in a long time. Water color pulls it all together.

Colors and lighting are fantastic! Background is also very nice. I'm wishing for the head to be angled slightly more toward the camera, however overall it works as is.

Real nice Dave! Great light, color on bird. Golden water/BG really make the green pop.

Gorgeous image Dave! Outstanding light, pose and background. About the only thing I might consider altering is the green flash of reflection that comes in contact with the bottom edge of the frame.

A great example why I should also continue to take photos from common species. Very nice...

    Hey Dave,
Great colors on this one! Besides the green on the frame edge.....works for me as presented!

This is a stunning shot! HA looks perfect to me as well as light, colours, BG, pose and techs. I feel the composition is a bit not balanced with the bird too low in the frame and too much space at the top. Here is another option - please let me know your thoughts.
    Cheers,
    Ofer

Thanks for reposting Ofer, and it is an interesting question.

I have not studied a lot of art, but I suspect in a situation like this it is personal preference. When i look at the two posts mine certainly feels heavier on the bottom which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Generally I prefer oof bg's to oof fg's. My composition felt fine to me, and after looking at both it would still be my preference. I think if i had gone with a composition like yours I may have taken a bit off top to again have mallard a bit more off set.

Perhaps someone else will chime in.

I do need to get rid of the extra green reflections either way.

I think this is an interesting discussion. The first time I saw your original post it looked wrong to me and my repost looked well balanced. However, the more I look at these two versions I start to see the beauty in your original composition. I wonder what is it in our brain that makes us prefer certain crops and feel that others are"wrong" .
Here is another option with a less balanced but maybe more interesting composition - very similar to your OP.

I am not sure what it is that has us prefer one crop over another. I suspect subtle preferences may occur from one day or week to the next.

I also think that I tend to unintentionally create a bit of tension in my photos. Who knows why.

Of the three crops, I prefer the third so well done.

    Dave
