I'm not sure if this is a long bill or a short bill. The bill appears pretty short, but the site usually has mostly long-billed. I didn't hear the call (which is supposed to be distinctive).

Love the low angle, the sharpness and the exposure. The tiny mud droplet from the raising foot adds to the image as well.

Nice one Ian. Beautiful light, nice and sharp. The leg-up is great. I'd give a bit more room at the top like this. The saturation shift is my fault.

Thanks, folks. John, I like the extra real-estate. Thanks.

Hi Ian, nice shot of this little guy. I think it is a short-billed, mostly based on the eye streak and barred flanks, but they are hard to tell apart. I think the sbd is mostly a sea shore type and the lbd mostly fresh water but I could be wrong. Either way, I like the classic pose and nice soft light. The extra head room helps I think.

Nice pose, nice light, good low angle, Ian. The extra headroom does improve it.

You've got one small spot at the L edge where the lowest sandbar runs out that you might want to clone out (can't tell if it's water debris or more likely a dust bunny).

I'd guess it's a short-billed too. It doesn't look that short, but the long-billed is really long, at least in proportion to the bird.

Thanks, Allen. Yes, I see the spot. It's debris on the water and I'll get rid of it.

I went back to look at the reported birds at the location (Gilbert Riperian Preserve) and both Long-billed and Short -billed have been seen there even though, as Kerry says, SBD is more often a salt water beast. I went to Sibley's , Nat Geo, and Petersons and couldn't decide. Sibley's says they can be tough to tell apart without hearing the call (which I didn't). The bill looks shorter than many I've seen, but I know there is variability in both. Ah well, it's one or the other :)
