    1/2000, f8, iso400, 300mm, manual mode

    cloned out some of those dead branches behind the bird. some crop

    Hey, Hazel, these are indeed beautiful birds. I think getting rid of those branches helped highlight his face. I think your image could be improved by brightening up the bird a bit so he stands out from the BG. I think you could have gotten away with a larger aperture in order to try to blur the BG a bit.

    Hi Hazel - love the wing position and the pose - Agree that a little more separation between the bird and the BG would improve the image somewhat.
    Dont know if a larger aperture would have helped much - would have certainly blurred the BG a little more - but what effect on the wings etc??

    Hi,

    I agree with Ian and Lance, and also feel that a crop with a bit more room a the top, a bit less at the bottom, and a bit more on the left, to give room for the bird to fly into, would improve it. Many times I have tried to take similar pictures, with spoonbills, herons, etc. just in front of mangroves, and I know how hard it is to get the focus just right - so well done!
