    Default Sleeping in

Another avocet from last Saturday when Pat and I hooked up with Allen Hirsch at Palo Alto Baylands.

    D300, Sigma 300-800@800, ISO 500, 1/1000, f/9

Uncropped, minor tweaking in LR: fill light 24, clarity & vibrance +27, exposure brush -1/4 stop on brightest white feathers.

I wished I used f/16 and maybe some fill flash.

Hi Allan - Perfect reflection - like the pose and techs look good.
Notice you are using the sigmonster - excellent lens in my opinion.
Agree with your idea of fill flash - depending on how far away you were and whether you have a better beamer or not.
Might have filled in some of the shadows a little - other option is of course to try and get the sun at your back to start with.
Good show - keep em coming .

Love the image, but understand your desire to have the entire bird sharp with this kind of pose.

Question on Fill Flash: In a low angle, highly reflective surface situation such as this, how do you keep the fill flash from messing up if not completely obliterating the reflection? It seems like it would be impossible to avoid the bound even at low power.

Lance: I do have an SB-900 and BetterBeamer, the bird was close enough. Moving for better light angle isn't doable in this part of Baylands, there is a long straight path with water on one side, this was shot at a right angle to the path. By the time you move sideways enough the subject is too small and the background often becomes bad.

Paul: I can't speak from direct experience, but basic physics seems to say that flash would not ruin the reflection. I think the flash hitting the water will mostly reflect away - angle of reflection = angle of incidence. I'll have to try it and find out.

    thanks for the feedback,
    Alan
