It seems to have turned out somewhat of a "Lion Week". Here's a contribution from my archives.

This young cub had loads of attitude - was the only member of its litter. Taken in the Sabi-Sands Game Reserve, South Africa.

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s with 200-400mm f4 VR @ 250mm
    f4.0 @ 1/500 SS @ ISO-1250
Overcast weather with the pride sitting in a dry riverbed under a canopy of trees

That is too cute, Morkel. Hard to believe he'll grow up to be a major predator in Sabi-Sands.

Any NR applied for that high ISO, or is the Nikon D3s that "clean"?

    Certainly 'cute' Morkel.

Really like the position in frame, the inquisitive look, swirling tail and good depth of detail, good setting, too. The grains of sand on the forehead is priceless.

BTW have you opened the eyes up a fraction?

    thanks Allen and Steve

@Allen - this was a loan kit (at the moment I still shoot Canon), but I was very impressed with the D3s. This is clean out of camera. I ran one small round of NR on the BG, mostly because it's part of my standard workflow, but I can honestly say that it did not need any NR at all.

@Steve - no selective work done here...are you saying I should do some S/H work on the eyes?

No, not in the least, I just thought they initially looked a fraction 'bright', but on reflection () and on the laptop they are fine. Just thought I would ask.

How much sleep are you getting these days?

    Cheers

more than I thought I would, but less than a healthy young man should
she is quite a good sleeper, plus the fact that we're feeding her the "old-fashioned" way ensures I don't have to get up in the middle of the night that much

Very nice Morkel, the wide eyed and open stance really enhance here, even the branch adds something as it splays it's front paws in negotiating it.
    Well done Dad!

Like the composition here Morkel, it all works for me. The sand on the face is a big plus and the oof tail curling around balances the cub's pose very well.

Hi Morkel, pretty good lion cub shot here, like the alert expression created by the ears and eyes, good detail on the lion, and the use of the branch to lead you in. Also liked the BG, added nice depth. And the sand adds interest for me too, even though the depressions may be the footprints of larger animals, for this little cub they are almost sand dunes.
    Well done
    cheers

    Morkel,

Absolutely beautiful, the eyes should of course be brown rather than yellow as it is a youngster

Mork, good the eye level perpective here, and just love the curious stare. The cub is well placed in the frame.

That is a cute one alright! I like the line created by the branches, the cub, and its' tail.
