Just had a most wonderful trip on the Hoopdie Deux with James Shadle learning so much about manual focusing, etc. Of course, only a few of my 800+ photos are worth seeing, but this is one I'd like to share. Nikon D40x, 1/1250, F8, 400iso, 300mm, cropped but otherwise as shot except for tiny curve adjust.
I think the pelicans are great fun when they bath. I posted one a few days ago, and from looking at your background, it looks like it was taken in the same area!
It doesn't get much better than being out with Capt. James in Tampa Bay!
Focusing with all the spray in the air can be a challenge, and it looks like the focus point was on the beach rather than the bird? I wouldn't expect much motion blur at the shutter speed. From you description, perhaps you were manually focusing this one?
Your exposure looks good.
The image needs some CCW rotation to level him out.
After you level it, you might want to crop it a bit more into a pano crop.
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I was trying to work with manual. I think some of the softness you see probably came from the distance, using the 300 lens. I see that now. Still learning to "see."
One good thing, is that you said the exposure looks good and for me that's a very big step. Thanks.
Hazel, Glad your day on the bay with James was great!! Some good suggestions from Randy. I like the curled up feathers and agree it needs to be a bit sharper on the eye especially. You are doing good and like you said the exposure is a big step.
