The female Passerini's Tanager has very different coloration than the male who is dramatic in black and red and a really big challenge photographically! This is from Doug and Greg's Costa Rica worshop. C&C encouraged and greatly appreciated.

Beautiful image Katie - great pose and I love the deep green background. I might consider a bit of "eye-doctoring" to bring out the reds - I think the red would look particularly good in this shot with the other bold primary colours.

Edit - looks like there might be some embedded profile issues - the colours in my repost look different than Katie's original (I didn't change anything there - I definitely prefer the greens in the original)

Thanks, Jeff, I like the "eye doctoring" and I will make that change to mine as well... without changing the greens, of course.

    Best,
    Katie

    Katie:

Soft light, nice look back, original BG color nice.

Perch a bit massive for this bird, but that effect is somewhat lessened by the pose, and angle of perch.

Jeff's rework on the eye certainly perked it up. I haven't seen this bird in person to know if that is realistic or not.

    Cheers

Thanks Randy, I think the eye is somewhere in between...

Very nice; colors are good to me in your OP, in fact I was looking at a real one yesterday as I am in Panama
    Nice lookback, exposure and sharpness
I like these birds, common here but a very nice bird indeed!

Hi, Katie. Everything looks good on this one. As for the perch, well, you know that we had to set it up so it would hold toucans as well I think working on the eye a bit was a nice touch but I agree that somewhere in between and not touching the BG color would be the perfect way to do it.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Hey Katie. I see we've opened up the floodgates! Like the eye contact and sharpness. I might darken the perch a little. On my laptop the bird and BG look like they could use a slight saturation boost. Another vote for an eye in between the two posted versions.
