    Default Baboon see-saw

    Baboon pair on Acacia see-saw.
Opportunities for good wildlife photography @ 5 mins to midday are few and far between, so I had to settle for a grab shot (whilst on the way to find shade for some lunch) of this baboon pair, you can make out the heat haze here on the grassland horizon.

    D3s 500VR + 1.2 (in body crop factor) 1/2000s ISO400@f/5.6. F/F. Masai Mara Oct 2010

    C & C most welcome

    Cheers

Marc, I like the comp with the layered BG. The haze is clearly visible. Yep, midday is not the best time to find subjects to capture images.

Like the idea here, though not too keen on the haze.

nice scene here Marc although I wish the baboon on the left was sitting as nicely outlined as the one on the RHS (more head-turn to make the shape distinguishable)

please explain the 1.2 in-camera crop factor on the full frame D3s?

On the D3s, you can use the in camera crop function from 1.2 (10MP from memory?) to a 1.5 (5.5MP) DX crop with the viewfinder masking out accordingly. Set up with a custom function button.
I sometimes use this feature when a little more reach is required than having to fumble around for the tc.

Marc, I like the sense of the plains at midday you've captured here. The heat haze, the baboons sitting it out in the solitary tree, the golden grasses. I can feel the heat and the glare just by looking at this image.

The image is A-O-K for me. Wish you had used a wide angle to capture the scene...
