    Default Cedar Waxwing

Ran into a flock of these beauties that were willing to hang around and have their pictures taken.

Very nice Lee. Like the pose, beautiful bird. The only nitpick I might say is the BG is a bit noisy. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Hi Lee, love the pose, composition, and color rendition. These are beautiful birds that are so appealing that they can survive a busy background IMO.

It is worth noting that you have barely clipped both the whites and the blacks, as evidenced by values of 0 and 255 especially in the face mask area. You can also see the whites clipping in and under the tail. A bird like this, with both full black and full white plumage, is always a challenge and the key is finding softer light. The noon-day sun in this case causes the scene to exceed the dynamic range of the camera. I must say though that you made the very best of the light situation and this is a very nice image.

    Hi Lee

I agree completely with Tom and Kerry...It's a very nice shot with lots of detail on the bird and only spoil by the clipping as Kerry has pointed out. Have you tried isolating the bird and applying a bit of NR on the background?

Lee- I like the pose and head angle. I suspect the image might be from a heavy crop of the original? If so I would loosen up the crop a bit. This would allow you to use less heavy sharpening. You should be able to help out the clipping at both ends when you process the RAW image.

I've noticed this as well- when they are feeding waxwings are very approachable and seem not to know you are there.

Wonderful shot Lee. I can't even manage to get close to these birds to take a good shot. You have managed to take a macro of it.

The DOF seem to be shallow and you seem to have lost the details on the blacks and whites but overall I like the image.
