    Default Mountain Bluebird

The migration of mountain bluebirds has started here in Colorado. I would like a different perch, but I only had a few minutes today, hopefully, I can get some better shots this week.

This is a really super portrait Tom. The BG is outstanding (what is it?). The bird's pose and head angle are perfect. I like the crop. I'm OK with the wire. Well done. Did you use flash? The catchlight and overall look suggests this.

Thank you John. The BG is a sparse field of grasses. I did not use a flash, the catchlight is from the morning sunlight at my back . When the sun is right these guys can really shine. I went out today to get a better shot, but they didn't cooperate. Hopefully, they will stick around long enough to get some more shots. They are beautiful in flight, but my flight shots of these guys weren't that great. I will keep trying.

    Hi Tom

Yep, this is a goodun... I also have no problems with the wire. Lovely background, and overall a very nice portrait. My only question is the area behind the neck. I have not ever seen one of these and I am not sure therefore if the mottly area is real, a slight OOF (don't think so as beak looks good) or a result of looking on my laptop as I am on business in Baltimore at the moment.

I like photographing birds on rusty barbed wire. There is nothing to compete with the image or obscure the bird. I like the fact that the entire bird is visible. Very well captured.
Unless my monitor is dirty, there appears to be a round blob on the RHS center of the image that you may want to remove.

Don, the "mottly area" I assume you are referring to is the grey areas. These are real.

Andrew, the blob you refer to is a dirty sensor, in fact I noticed 2 or 3 in the image after I posted it. Oops!

Thank you all for your comments.

Really sweet image - great pose, great color.

The few bluebirds I've seen all seem to like to perch on fences or fenceposts. I kind of like the barbed wire, too - the rust color complements the BG and bird color.
