    Default First B & W

Basically only 3 colors in this one, and I wasn't happy with how 2 of them looked, so I got rid of all of them and got this. Not a big fan of B & W for nature shots but liked the sky and thought this one was okay (maybe just different because I never do them). 40D, 1-400L, f6.3, 1/1000s, ISO 200, -1/3 EC, HH, about 80% of original.

Hey Steve, works for me. I like the similar poses, together with the well weathered rock. Im just wondering with your cloudy sky, if darkening it a whole lot more to create a 'stormy' feel to it.

Hi Steve, great to see a change of tact, but knowing your previous images of these guys, I have to say, I prefer to see them in glorious 'Technicolour' as the colours tends to be nice and rich and the coats really seem to ping out from the surrounding habitat. Sadly in B/W it really isn't working for me, it just looks flat IMHO, juxtapose to the normal colour version. I also feel it doesn't quite have the sharpness and clarity of detail compared to your normal posting, might be due to the B/W conversion or is it an old pair of eyes?

I really like the composition and the two animals looking down, but wondered if it might benefit with a fraction off the top?

Perhaps Steve post the colour version later, once you get more replies, as it might overshadow the OP and people might get side tracked.

kind of agree with Steve here, Steve :)
and you know I like my decent serving of B&W...maybe if you try getting the whites "whiter" here, it would bring back some punch as it's all grey in this case?

This sums up my feelings as well, except when you are using it to hide poor quality in colour image, which is undoubtedly not the case here.

Steve, I don't do many of these either, but I like what you were trying for. I agree the whites need to be brighter here. I also agree with the comments about the clouds being darkened a bit, but would have to see the color scene to say for certain. I think the tonal range, just isn't there yet, but can be fixed. How did you process this? What software?

Man Steve, either way, you sure put yourself in position for a dramatic shot. Amazing work, as usual.

Love the perspective with the sky BG Steve, I don't mind this B&W conv but if your exposure is good would also like to see in glorious colour.

I like it Steve. With some contrast adjustments this could be an even stornger and much more dramatic image IMHO. Well done.

Thanks to all for the comments, suggestions, and honest feedback.

    Kurt,
No special software used. Just messing around with things in PSE 3.
