I am getting excited about the crane migration. I will be in Monte Vista in a couple weeks.
BTW, I have never been to Nebraska, if anyone that has been to both Nebraska and Monte Vista, Co and wouldn't mind telling me the difference, I would appreciate the help! I know the number of birds is MUCH higher in NE, but wondering more of the differences in shooting conditions.
Nicely exposed flight image, sharp and good angle of approach. Like the curled up primaries of the near wing. It is unfortunate about the shadow as I enjoy flight images with that kind of BG.
Good comp and techs. Sharp as posted. I do wish the near wing was higher as I'm not fond of the "thin flat" wing look. I also find the shadow aligned with the bird unfortunate.
I too like the composition and the focus is great, just that background shadow is distracting.
Regarding the Monte Vista crane festival, I have not been, but have heard from other photographers. Apparently the birds become skittish as they move north from New Mexico, so it is more difficult to get images like the one you posted here. Most of the images I've seen from Monte Vista are more distant environmental/scenic photos.
Artie has been to Nebraska and even did a TV show about it. I have not been there either (thought about going one day). It too seems like it is more difficult to get close to the birds, although there can be so many, one probably has a lot of opportunities. But there too seems to be mostly more distant images. For example, Tom Mangelsen has some Nebraska crane images in his gallery at the Denver airport (DIA). They are more distant images (although that is common to his style).
You might send Artie an email asking about Nebraska (or maybe he is reading here).
