    Default Non-Baited Dalmatian Pelican :)

    Attached Images Attached Images

This bird was feeding amongst the fisherman's net poles right along the shore of Lake Kerkini, Greece. Strangely the fisherman love and feed the pelicans with fish from their nets but despise the Great Cormorants.

Image created with the 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/640 sec. at f/5.6 set manually.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome. See lot more of this species in a recent blog post here and in the next BAA Bulletin.

Love the fish in midair and the water drops, Artie.

    Was this handheld?

    Artie:

The string of drops is neat, nice texture showing in the reds, suspect it took a little work(although the soft light obviously helped). Mass of fish, esp. the flying one is cool.

That long bill makes a pano crop perfect.

    Cheers

    Randy

Thanks guys. Randy, the hardest part was the fish which needed a nice Linear Burn. Everything else was lightened to reduce the gloomy light.

Love the fish dance going on - do those fish know how lucky they are to be eaten by such a good looking bird?

That throat pouch colour is amazing.

A fun image to view. In addition to the fish and the droplets, the detail in the red part of the bill (veins?) is eye-catching. I would like to see a bit more on the right side so the eye is a bit more into the frame and none of those funky head feathers touch the edge.

I especially like the light coming through the pouch. The simple color scheme, wild neck feathers, and fish in mid-air are very nice. I wish the tip of the bill was as sharp as the base.

Very nice behaviour and action shot. You did very well with the poor light.

I agree 100% on having more room behind the bird. But, framing was a b - - - - with the 800; I could barely fit the head and bill in the frame. In addition, once they put their heads in the water they lurched forward making things nearly impossible. I chopped off dozens of bills! This one was the best by far :)

Thanks Chas. Which Nik filter do you think that I used? Killer stuff in your new gallery BTW....

Nice action and excellent detail. If you did use a NIK filter, I would guess Tonal Contrast.

Nope, no NIK filter was used. Glad that you liked.

This is my favorite of the Dalmatian Pelicans you've posted. Love the crop and the minnows and the droplets and the red pouch and the detail in the neck feathers. Agree that just a touch of additional canvas on the right would be nice, but you wouldn't want much, and don't think it would make much of a difference to this beautiful image.

Artie, this is one heck of a shot. All those tiny fish and the water droplets make this so unique.

Excellent image and whilst I have not seen many images of this species I'm guessing the the number of fish the bird is tossing in its bill takes it a step above others.

What an awesome image! Love the action, the beautiful orange, the disheveled bird, and did I say the action? Love the pano crop too. Superb execution.
