    Default Backlit Squirrel

While waiting for some birds to drop by at the feeder station this squirrel came by for some bird seed. The image is almost directly against the light and unfortunately the background is "toasted snow". I tend to like the image anyway even though - what do you think ?!? The image is slightly cropped otherwise almost no PP.

Nikon D300, 500 mm, 1/80 sec, f/6.3 and fill flash.

hey Svante, that is a gorgeous squirrel. but you are right, with the extreme backlighting - you've lost his tail as well. do you use LR? is there any detail in that tail at all if you pull the exposure down? I'm wondering if you can do a kind of HDR layering... he is a beautiful color and you have great detail and sharpness in the other areas - were you able to get any photos with your shadow pointing towards him?

    Hej Pat

Sorry but the tail is toast as well. I have other images which isn't as badly backlit but somehow I like this one best and no I don't have any images where the sun is coming from behind me - I was just sort of idling time away while waiting for a Crested Tit to show up (it did but the images wasn't good enough to show unfortunately ).

I like his ears and I also like toast, but thanks for sharing. Next time the sun will be more cooperative!

Svante- Nice to see the European Red Squirrel with its ear tufts. This is a tough one to correct for. I tried Topaz adjust and it did a reasonable job on the tail. If you shoot RAW you may want to attempt a strong recovery of the highlights and then touch them up in later processing.
