Canon 1Dmk4, Canon 300f2.8is lens, handheld. S/speed 1/200s at f/4.0, Eval metering, +.33 exp comp, Ai servo. Iso 1600. Cropped from 16 to 13mp. Processed in ACR6 and PS. I ended up with an unexpected exposure problem here with bright hilights coming from the reflected light from the ripples the hippo made. NR on BG. Location Savuti, Botswana. March 2011. 18h20, and overcast so no direct light. All C and C welcome

He is certainly not smiling at you Grant.

I like the inclusion of the OOF hippo in the BG gives things a bit more context. I think you have done well with your light & settings, but would like to see some more image at the foot, however I guess you have cropped it to reduce the highlights as you mentioned in the intro, although a little PP can resolve that. Amazed at the clarity and detail of the image at ISO1600, nicely done, especially with the glistening head and light through the nostrils.

Might suggest loosing the white water reflect (?) on the LHS that runs off the back of the hippo.

the low perspective is so cool here Grant! were you in a mokoro?
awesome details and the diffused overcast light has worked well

great to see these techs as I got my 300mm f2.8 L IS USM yesterday and loving the sharpness of it!

Very nice POV and expressive face. Would have been nice to have a little more water at the base but understand your dilemma. I like the light reflecting off the outside of the hippo's ears.

Obvious nit of lack of room at bottom, and probably difficult to add canvas, were you laying down on the bank?

IMHO OOF Hippos in BG are a nuisance ut once again difficult to remove.

Hi there all, thanks so much for commenting. I really only trimmed off a sliver from the bottom of the hippo on my raw file, so not much to add in there. I should have been paying more attention to the comp. This repost is from same series, but here I left space below. The hippo wasn't gaping though! Any thoughts on this comp versus previous appreciated. This image is straight from the camera except for a global exposure adjustment, and techs are 1/250s, f4, iso1600, +0.33. No colour correcting, no sharpening, no NR. No time for a proper job right now i am afraid.. am guiding..
    Thanks

Good head on view and I like the juxtaposition with the BG one. I would have liked to see a bit more room on bottom like in the second image.

Grant - these 2 would be excellent side by side. In the second one it appears the hippo is staring you down and in the OP has popped up showing you aggression. The low POVs and head on look take these up another notch and only nit on the OP for me would be the already mentioned space on the bottom, still an image I would love to have taken.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated. I was pleasantly surprized at how well these images came out given the high iso but at least it means I can shoot away in low light and still get lucky sometimes.

Grant, I would definitely work on the second image when you have time. The POV, eyes and nostril detail and the reflection are all there waiting for cropping and PP enhancement. I would certainly try to tone down or crop out the very high reflections on the hippo's back in the 2nd image. Both hippo faces are interesting and have character.
